What Are Self-Care Skills in Pediatric OT?

Self-care skills, also called activities of daily living, include dressing, brushing teeth and hair, bathing, toileting, and managing belongings. When motor, sensory, or attention challenges get in the way, morning and bedtime routines can become stressful for the whole family. Pediatric OT helps children build the skills and routines that support growing independence.

Signs Your Child May Need Self-Care Support

Needing help is normal at younger ages. Consider OT when self-care skills lag behind peers or create ongoing family stress.

  • Dressing still needs a lot of adult help

Putting on clothes, managing fasteners, or choosing weather-appropriate clothing may take longer than expected for their age.

  • Hygiene routines are resisted or incomplete

Toothbrushing, hair care, bathing, or handwashing may be avoided, rushed, or unfinished without constant prompting.

  • Toileting independence is delayed or stressful

Bathroom routines, wiping, or managing clothing in the washroom may still require significant support.

  • Morning and bedtime routines feel chaotic

Getting ready may involve frequent reminders, meltdowns, or long timelines that disrupt the family day.

  • Personal belongings are hard to organise

Backpacks, shoes, lunch items, or clothing may frequently go missing or need adult management.

How Self-Care OT Helps

We break routines into achievable steps and build the motor, sensory, and organisational skills behind independence.

  • More independent daily routines

Support dressing, hygiene, and toileting skills matched to your child’s age and developmental stage.

  • Calmer home transitions

Reduce friction in morning and bedtime routines with structured strategies families can actually use.

  • Confidence that carries into school

Skills practised at home often transfer to washroom use, locker routines, and classroom independence.

What Self-Care OT Looks Like

Therapy focuses on the routines that matter most to your family, using practice, adaptive strategies, and parent coaching.

1. Map the routines that feel hardest

We review morning, bedtime, hygiene, and school-related self-care to understand barriers and strengths.

2. Set realistic independence goals

Goals are practical, such as dressing with fewer prompts or completing toothbrushing with a visual sequence.

3. Practise skills and coach caregivers

Sessions build underlying skills while parents learn how to scaffold success without constant battles.
