What Is OAP Funding?

The Ontario Autism Program (OAP) is Ontario’s program for children and youth on the autism spectrum. When people say “OAP funding,” they usually mean funded supports available through that system—not a single cheque or one automatic benefit. The OAP includes several pathways, and families may be able to access different types of help over time.

It is also important to know that registering with the OAP is not the same as already having a core clinical funding allocation. Many families are registered and still working through next steps with AccessOAP and a care coordinator. If that is where you are, it is a common place to be.

Who Is Eligible for OAP Funding in Ontario?

In general, to register for the Ontario Autism Program (OAP), a child must be under 18, live in Ontario, have a written autism diagnosis from a qualified professional, and families register through AccessOAP. Program details can change; always confirm current requirements with official Ontario and AccessOAP resources.

Who this page is for

If you are raising an autistic child in Thornhill, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, or nearby communities and the funding language feels overwhelming, this guide is for you. You are not expected to sort it all out alone.

How to Apply for OAP Funding Through AccessOAP

Most families begin with AccessOAP—the entry point for Ontario Autism Program registration and many next steps. The exact screens and wording can change, so follow the live site for current instructions.

    Create an AccessOAP account

Start at AccessOAP and create an account for your family.

  • icon

    Submit required documents

You will typically need your child's written autism diagnosis from a qualified professional and other documents the portal requests.

  • icon

    Follow next-step guidance

After you register, AccessOAP and program communications will outline available service options and what to do next. Save emails and letters so you can revisit dates and instructions.

Know that some supports may be available while you wait

Depending on your situation, families may access certain foundational or other streams while working toward core clinical steps. Your portal messages and care coordinator (when assigned) are the best guide.

What happens after registration

Registration is an important step, but it is not the same as receiving a core clinical funding allocation. Families are typically invited into core clinical services through AccessOAP, then complete a determination of needs process with a care coordinator before a funding allocation is confirmed. Your portal messages and official letters are the best record of where you are in that journey.

What OAP Funding Can Cover

OAP core clinical services can include applied behaviour analysis (ABA), speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, and mental health services—including counselling and psychotherapy—when they are part of an eligible plan for your child. What is available to your family depends on your child's needs, program stream, and the determination of needs process—not on this page.

Other OAP supports families should know about

Families who are registered in the OAP may also access other streams—such as foundational family services, caregiver-mediated early years programs, core clinical services, entry to school, and urgent response services—depending on eligibility and invitations through the program. Your AccessOAP account and communications from your care team are the best place to see what applies to you.

A note about interim one-time funding

Interim one-time funding is a legacy pathway for some families who registered before April 2021. It is not the standard path for families who are newly registering today. If you are unsure which stream you are in, check your letters and your AccessOAP account, or contact AccessOAP directly.

OAP Registration vs. OAP Funding: How to Tell What You Have

This is the question we hear most often: “We signed up—does that mean we have funding?” Usually, you need to look at what AccessOAP has told you in writing and what you see in your account—not at how long you have been waiting.

  • icon

    Not yet registered

If you have not created an AccessOAP account and submitted a registration, your child is not yet in the OAP system. Starting registration is the first step.

  • icon

    Registered in the OAP

If AccessOAP confirms registration, your child is in the OAP. That is meaningful—but it does not automatically mean you have a core clinical funding allocation yet.

  • icon

    Foundational or other streams only

Some families have access to foundational family services, early years programs, entry to school, or urgent response supports while core clinical steps are still in progress. Your letters and portal will usually name the stream.

  • icon

    Core clinical funding allocation

Families invited into core clinical services work through AccessOAP and a determination of needs process with a care coordinator before receiving a funding allocation. If you have an allocation, correspondence will typically say so clearly—including amounts or budgets where applicable.

How to Check If You Also Have Private Insurance Coverage

OAP pathways and private insurance are separate. Many families use one, the other, or both, depending on their plan. To see whether your benefits may help with services at Young Sprouts, review your benefits booklet or insurer portal and look for coverage under designations such as Registered Social Worker (RSW / MSW / Social Worker), Registered Psychotherapist (RP / Psychotherapist), or Occupational Therapy—in line with how we explain coverage on our insurance for social workers, psychotherapist coverage, and occupational therapy coverage pages.

Questions to ask your insurer

  • Does my plan cover services for children or dependants?
  • Which provider designations are covered?
  • What percentage is reimbursed?
  • What is my annual maximum?
  • Do I need a physician referral?
  • Is there a per-session cap?

Our therapy cost calculator and fees section can help you think through budgeting alongside any OAP or insurance coverage.
